Weed control
The perfect weed free lawn is something
to behold, but weeds are tougher than lawn grasses. They grow
all the year round, whatever the weather. Their control
requires regular and dedicated treatment. Weeds tend to invade
lawns that have been weakened or affected by insects or
disease, or bad weather, depending upon the season. Their types
are numerous, from the obvious intruders like dandelions,
daisies, clover or buttercups, to weedy grasses and moss.
Preventative measures, with the correct
products, need to be taken before Spring growth of the
lawn in March and April. The right weedkiller used in
February will stop the germination of emerging weeds.
Other products will eradicate existing weeds. A good weed
control product should be effective for around two months.
The programme, in conjunction with a fertilizer, should be
continued on this regular basis until well into the
Autumn.
Weed killing products give precise instructions on use, and
these should not be disregarded. A well meant double helping
does not improve the result, and may have a disastrous effect,
possibly killing new grass. Patience will be rewarded.
Weeds appear on our lawns like uninvited guests, whether via
the wind, seeds dropped by birds, or on someone's boot. They
spoil the look, but they can be controlled, as will be
explained later in this guide.
