Lawn fertilizer
Lawns should not be forgotten when it
comes to regular feeding. The many tiny plants in its make up
need fertilizer just as much as vegetables and flowers.
The most important element for a green and healthy looking
lawn, after water, is nitrogen. This should be combined with
lesser amounts of phosphorous, to help with germination, and
the back up of potassium. These nutrients are graded
professionally in most well known varieties of lawn feed.
Attention to fertilization not only keeps a
lawn looking green and healthy, maintains its turf density
and root development, but also helps it to stand up to the
stresses and strains of weather, disease, and standard
wear and tear.
The weather should be taken into consideration before
feeding, when showery conditions are preferable. The
application should be made onto dry grass, but with damp soil
underneath. The lawn should not be fertilized during a
rainstorm. Alternatively, a dry spell will require a good
watering after application.
Feed can be obtained in liquid or granular form. Liquid
fertilizer may be applied with a simple hose sprayer, whilst
the granular type requires a spreader and watering in. It is
wise to keep off the lawn once fertilizer has been applied,
until it is completely dry.
